Mary Shelley
1797-1851

In 1997, a long-lost children’s story, by Mary Shelley was discovered in a chest in a family’s Tuscan palazzo. The handwritten story, entitled, Maurice, or the Fisher’s Cot had lain unnoticed in a disused box room for over 150 years. Claire Tomalin and Catherine Payling, Curator of the Keats-Shelley House, were responsible for its subsequent authentication and commented that, ‘The discovery adds greatly to our understanding of Mary Shelley's mind and imagination.’
